From Tweets to novels – What does Twitter’s future hold?
Twitter could be about to undergo a major transformation that could change the way we Tweet forever.
Jack Dorsey, the original creator of the microblogging platform, stumbled upon the word “Twitter” during its creation in 2006. And what does it mean, you ask? “A short burst of inconsequential information” and “chirps from a bird”. That sounds about right for a platform where we share our thoughts in 280 characters or less!
But hold on to your feathers, folks. The new CEO, Elon Musk, has announced plans to increase the character limit to a whopping 10,000! That’s like giving every bird in the world a microphone and letting them go wild. This decision comes after the launch of a 4,000-character limit for Twitter Blue subscribers in the US.
Will this drastic change be beneficial or detrimental to the platform’s popularity?
Twitter is known for its microblogging feature, but what happens when it becomes a platform for long-form content? Will marketers and individuals continue to use it as frequently? Or will users start flying the nest?
We’ve explored some pros and cons of this potential new feature…
Pros of longer Tweets
We can say goodbye to the days of struggling to condense our thoughts into a handful of characters and Twitter threads and hello to the freedom of expressing all of our deepest, darkest thoughts in one go.
Not only will this save time when it comes to creating lengthy threads and multiple Tweets, but it will also enable individuals and brands to share their thoughts without having to compromise on words. Followers and other viewers could love the convenience of reading Tweets in one shot, without the need for endless threads.
And don’t worry, the longer character limit won’t hinder the ability to add creative elements to tweets. It’s said that users can still use fun features like polls, GIFs, and images to make Tweets stand out from the crowd. This is especially exciting news for brands looking to promote new products, launch campaigns, or share content from their website.
Cons of longer Tweets
Picture this: Twitter, the ultimate platform for short and snappy messages, may soon be getting a huge character limit increase. Sounds exciting, right? But hold on, because not everything is sunshine and rainbows with this potential change.
Sure, the idea of sharing longer messages is appealing, but what happens when everyone starts to overuse this feature? Suddenly, Twitter could become a breeding ground for procrastination, and the quality of content on the platform could suffer. We don’t want that, do we?
And if that’s not enough to make you sceptical, rumours are floating around that this feature will only be available to paying subscribers of Twitter Blue. So much for equal opportunities, huh?
Oh, and one more thing – if you’re someone who likes to schedule Tweets in advance, you might want to hold off on those long-form messages. It’s likely that social media management tools won’t be able to handle them just yet.
The big question…is this one change too many?
The new CEO’s takeover of the company has introduced a lot of changes, whether that’s mass layoffs at the company, introducing Twitter Blue, blocking alternative ways to view Twitter, changing the way users view Tweets and reinstating controversial accounts, it seems people are deserting the channel and flocking to new platforms with similar features such as Mastodon and Discord.
Although we don’t know when or if this update will happen, one thing’s for sure – scrolling through Twitter won’t be a quick activity anymore, especially when checking out trending hashtags or news stories.
So, whilst the idea of a character limit increase is intriguing, there’s a lot to consider before we dive headfirst into the world of longer tweets. Will it enhance the Twitter experience or lead to its downfall? Only time will tell.
