Food styling with Pip Spence
In May, the food team spent the day with the renowned food and prop stylist, Pip Spence, who previously spent six years full-time at Jamie Oliver’s food team. Pip is also a cookbook author and has worked on food shoots with the likes of Fortnum & Mason, Clarence Court, and Prue Leith, to name a few.
Why it’s important to keep learning
Food styling is something we are incredibly passionate about at Liquid and continuing to learn about new food and prop trends whilst adapting our skills for our clients is an integral part of our development. Consumer habits are always changing and bringing in experts, such as Pip, into our development kitchen to share her experiences, skills and different technique enables us to provide our clients with a world-class service.
An international eye
We service our food clients in multiple markets – from the UK, France and Germany to Australia – meaning that thinking about different audiences and food trends from across the world is essential for us as a Global agency.
Our teams spend a lot of time researching trends, colour tones, ingredients and more that are popular in each country. We then like to put our research into practice first-hand on our shoots and hone our skills with leading food experts in training sessions.
Trends
During our course with Pip, one thing that was highlighted was the relaxed approach when food styling for a consumer-based audience. This means the use of linens, crumbs and creating a shot that tells a story; plates with servings on, drinks, chopping boards in the background that show ingredients being prepped are really helping to set the scene for the chosen meal or recipe.
Another factor that is prominent worldwide is the cost-of-living crisis. When thinking about recipes we need to consider ingredients that can easily be purchased from supermarkets and using produce that can be used multiple times across lots of different dishes.
There has also been a shift in consumer habits for growing your own – this can simply be growing your own herbs or going one step further with growing fruit and veg. Being mindful of ingredients that people can grow themselves is another key element in adapting our tactic to reflect the current landscape.
